Questions and Answers on
Encapsulation
June 2005.
What is encapsulation?
Encapsulation is a carpet and upholstery cleaning process using new and
improved cleaning chemicals which wrap up or encapsulate the soil and
detergent residue so that it can easily be removed by dry vacuuming.
What equipment can be used?
Single brush rotary scrubbers fitted with either brush or pad are suitable.
The encapsulating chemical, Sonitron® Zenith, can be presprayed onto the
carpet, or the machine can preferably fitted with a tank and set up as a
shampoo machine. Machines with a cylindrical brush such as the Rotowash and
von Schrader are also suitable. A straight line machine, the Cimex Cyclone
is very suitable for larger areas or commercial work generally.
Is encapsulation limited to traditional shampoo type
processes?
No. It can improve results with bonnet cleaning and also with hot water soil
extraction.
Will customers feel we are out of date is we sell it
as a shampoo process?
Possibly, since this is not the way to do it. Encapsulation has made such as
vast improvement in the results obtained that it would be more accurate to
describe it to carpet owners as "the new encapsulation process."
What essential steps are required for encapsulation?
The steps required are:
1. dry vacuum,
preferably using a commercial upright machine fitted with a brush. Bear in
mind that 85% of the soil in the average carpet is dry soil and can be
removed by the initial vacuum.
2. If there
are stains such as paint which are not removable by any cleaning process
these should be spotted next.
3. Apply the
Sonitron® Zenith with any of the machines described above. Similar to good
quality extraction chemicals, such as SK50 or Sonisteam, Zenith will remove
many stains during the cleaning process. The remaining approx. 15% of soil,
which is adhering to the fibre, is encapsulated during the cleaning phase.
On some types of carpet some machines may leave swirl marks. Operators may
prefer to pile set to give a better appearance at this stage.
4. The final dry vacuum will get rid of the encapsulated soil. (This may be
done by the carpet owner as is generally recommended after extraction
cleaning.) This opens up an opportunity to sell standard and premium
services with encapsulation, as is often successfully done with other
methods. The premium encapsulation service
